The Value of Locking In Long Term Rates

Energy Rates do fluctuate, but historically trend up. It can be a risky proposition to try and time the market, while securing long rates at the right time is a lot better and safer strategy.

Saving over the long term and avoiding Rate spikes is a lot easier than looking for instant savings and high risks.

Spring 2021 Texas Freeze, Event Risks and Consequences

What Happened...

  • In February 2021, The Electric Reliability   Council of Texas (ERCOT) experienced the worst generation-related outages in   its history after a statewide cold snap and winter storm led to frozen   equipment at power plants of all types and a natural gas system that could   not deliver adequate fuel supplies where needed which caused even more power   plants to shut down. More than 40,000 MW of generation in Texas went offline.
  • Millions of Texas customers went without power   for days as “rotating outages” were not able to be shifted to other sections   of the grid since transmission and distribution utilities were required to   keep power flowing to critical facilities such as hospitals and local   shelters.
  •  Prices in ERCOT were pushed   to $9,000/MWH as suppliers and generators raced to meet demand from scarcely   available sources. This led to some residential and business customers,   particularly those who were not on contract or had enrolled Variable Index   rate plans, as well as many underprepared retail energy suppliers, to face   huge bills for power consumed during the emergency period.
  • While the vast majority of Texas consumers and   businesses are locked in on prices that are not directly tethered to the   wholesale market, the storm event risked the continued operation of several   independent retailers who did not have financial ties to the generators   charging those emergency rates or were inadequately protected financially   (“hedged”) against such a large and prolonged emergency pricing period.
  • The long term impact of this event is still to   be determined, but the experience emphasizes the importance of choosing a   reputable supplier and locking in long term Fixed rate price protection for   your home and business. National1 Energy is here to help you manage that   operational risk in the most effective manner possible by guiding on a   supplier choice that has a customized rate and contracts specifically   tailored for your business with high quality, financially secure retail   suppliers who compete to win your business.
